The ghettos of the holocaust
by: Avery Suarez

The holocaust was a tragic piece of history. In this paper you will soon learn about three of the ghettos of the holocaust such as the Kolomyia ghetto being liquidated (exterminated/wiped out). Also the Pinsk ghetto being established (formed) followed by the Lviv or lemberg ghetto being established a few months later. Remember that these were not pleasant times and expect information about tens of thousands of innocent deaths.

Kolomyia was a city located in the western part of Ukraine. During the wars, Kolomyia belonged to Poland for the time being. Once the German invasion of Poland occurred it was incorporated into the Soviet Union. The city came under direct control of the German administration in august 1941. Shortly following, a Judernaut was established. Many different actions were taken against the Jews, and the Kolomyia ghetto was established on March 25th, 1942 containing over 18,000 Jews.
Over the period of the next year over 16,000 people were sent to Belzec. Kolomyia was liquidated February 2 of 1943.

Pinsk, which was located in Poland before world war II was occupied by the Nazis on July 4, 1941, just 13 days after the German attack on the Soviet Union. At the time, it was estimated that 26,000 to 40,000 Jews made up Pinsk’s population. Between august 4-7, 1941 the Nazis controlling Pinsk rounded up 7,000 to 11,000 Jewish men and shot them on the outskirts of town near large pits that were dug for the bodies to be buried.

On November 8, 1941 the Germans established a ghetto in Lviv, also known as Lemberg. All of the Jews within the city were ordered to move to the Lviv ghetto by December 15, 1941. German police started to begin a series of what they called “selections” in an operation called “action under the bridge.”
5,000 elderly and sick Jews were selected and shot. By the month of December, around 110,000 and 120,000 Jews were living in the Lviv ghetto. The Lviv ghetto was one of the first to have Jews transported to death camps.

As these historic but tragic events took place, many innocent Jews were killed. Over 16,000 were killed in kolomyia and once the Lviv and pinsk ghettos were liquidated after establishment
Tens of thousands of Jews were probably killed. As we all know Hitler’s actions were completely wrong and tragic.
